Dysfunction of Pranavaha Srotas in Acute and Chronic Toxicity: Bridging Ayurvedic Concepts with Contemporary Respiratory Pathologies
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: The body is considered an accumulation of channels, called Srotas, of which Prāṇavaha Srotas is the prime “Cardio-Pulmonary Unit” vital for the continuation of life. The unobstructed state of these channels is considered the material cause for health, while their functional state is often disrupted by exogenous toxins, referred to as Viṣa.
Objective: To bridge the quantitative gap between classical Ayurvedic ideology of toxicity and modern pathophysiology of the lungs. The study aims to appreciate the effect of toxins through two routes: Acute Toxicity (Āśu Viṣa) resulting in sudden functional obstruction (Saṅga), and Chronic Toxicity (Dūṣī Viṣa) causing slow structural remodeling (Vimārga Gamana).
Methods: This is a narrative review based on classical Ayurvedic literature (Bṛhat Trayī) and modern medical science. Relevant references regarding Prāṇavaha Srotas, Srotoduṣṭi, and Viṣa were critically analyzed to establish pathophysiological correlations.
Key Findings: From the reviewed literature, Āśu Viṣa correlates with sudden onset obstruction as seen in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Dūṣī Viṣa correlates with chronic structural remodeling conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis or COPD.
Conclusion: The research confirms that Prāṇavaha Srotas indeed functions as a complex cardio-pulmonary-vascular system. The distinction between functional blockage requiring emergency support and structural deformation requiring bio-purification provides valuable insights for integrative clinical applications.
