Abstract

Background: Duṣṭa Vraṇa (chronic putrefied wound) is a challenging condition in clinical practice. Ayurvedic texts recommend Jalaukavacāraṇa (leech therapy) and Vraṇa Ropana Tailas for its management. Śothā Śardula Taila and Jatyādi Taila are traditionally used for wound cleansing and healing. However, comparative clinical evidence of their effectiveness with Jalaukavacāraṇa is limited.

Objective: To evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy of Śothā Śardula Taila and Jatyādi Taila, both administered with Jalaukavacāraṇa, in the management of Duṣṭa Vraṇa.

Methods: This prospective, randomized, comparative clinical study will enroll patients with Duṣṭa Vraṇa, randomly allocated into two groups:

  • Group A: Jalaukavacāraṇa followed by Śothā Śardula Taila

  • Group B: Jalaukavacāraṇa followed by Jatyādi Taila

  • Interventions will follow classical Ayurvedic protocols for a predefined study period.

Outcome Measures:

Primary outcomes: pain (Vedanā), discharge (Śrava), odour (Gandha), wound size and depth, and granulation tissue formation.

Secondary outcomes: overall wound healing and any adverse events during treatment.

Expected Results: The study aims to provide comparative clinical evidence on the role of Śothā Śardula Taila and Jatyādi Taila with Jalaukavacāraṇa in Duṣṭa Vraṇa management, aiding identification of a more effective therapeutic approach for putrefied wounds.
